The Windows 8.1 Simulator offered several key features that made it an attractive option for users. The first thing that caught their attention was the Start screen, which displayed a colorful array of tiles that seemed to dance across the screen. The team was impressed by how accurately the simulator had recreated the Windows 8.1 interface, from the Live Tiles to the Charms bar.
When a developer launched the simulator from Visual Studio, it hooked into the existing Windows 8.1 kernel but isolated the application within a virtualized window. This allowed developers to interact with their apps as if they were running on a standalone Windows RT tablet or Microsoft Surface device, without needing to deploy the code to physical external hardware.
