Danielle Resnick

Danielle Resnick is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit and a Non-Resident Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. Her research focuses on the political economy of agricultural policy and food systems, governance, and democratization, drawing on extensive fieldwork and policy engagement across Africa and South Asia.

If you ask any rock fan from Ljubljana to Skopje to name the best band ever, you will get a fight. But four names always rise to the top. These aren't just "local" bands; they are world-class acts that simply sang in a different language.

One of the most fascinating figures was , whose flamboyant, transvestite performances and synth-driven pop shocked and captivated the nation, laying the groundwork for what would become known as "Yu Wave". The early `80s also saw the emergence of groundbreaking electronic music. Groups like Kozmetika were among the first to create pure electronic music, while bands like Max & Intro released sparkling synth-pop gems. The electronic scene was deep and varied, encompassing everything from dark industrial electro from Slovenia to quirky synth-pop from Croatia and Macedonia.

The term "Ex-Yu" (ex-Yugoslav) refers to the music that originated in the countries that once made up the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. From the 1960s to the 1990s, Yugoslavia fostered a truly unique music culture — open to Western influence but distinct in its political, social, and artistic context. The 1970s brought a wave of massive bands. (White Button), led by the legendary Goran Bregović, rose to become arguably the greatest former-Yugoslav rock band, blending hard rock with traditional Balkan folk melodies to create a unique and authentic sound. Meanwhile, bands like Azra , Riblja Čorba , and Prljavo Kazalište were writing anthems and politically charged lyrics that captured the hearts of a generation.

The ability to mix Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Mediterranean influences creates a sound that is both familiar and exotic.
